The American Kestrel
The beautiful American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. It is widespread over most of the America’s. Only about the size of a Mourning Dove, with a larger head, it has narrower wings often bent and swept back at the tips when flying. The male has a blue crown and blue wings, whereas the female has a brown crown and brown wings. They both have black and white facial patterns.
They eat insects and other small prey, mostly from the ground, but will take prey in flight also. When perched they will often pump their tails as if trying to maintain balance.
